Get ready to see more electric motorcycles at your next Motorcycle Show. In recent years, electric cars are gaining in popularity as their technology improves and allows them to perform at the same levels as their gas-powered cousins. The stigma of an electric car being a slow, gutless wonder is fading, and Harley Davidson is hoping to do the same thing for the electronic motorcycle.

This month, Harley debuted their LiveWire motorcycle, taking it to over 30 cities across the United States. While it has been in production for over four years, the company isn’t putting the motorcycle on the market yet. Instead they will be judging public reaction to see if consumers are interested in an electronic bike. The hope is that the electronic motorcycle will appeal to younger consumers in urban areas.

Harley’s LiveWire certainly isn’t the first of it’s kind, but it is the first time a big name brand has tried to capture some of the electric motorcycle market. Like it’s car cousin, though, it may require some more time in the testing lab before it really captures the attention of the American consumer. Currently, the bike can only go about 50 miles before it needs to be plugged in again, making it great for consumers with short commutes or as an errand bike, but impractical for much else.

Even if Harley’s first electric motorcycle doesn’t capture the market like their world famous gas-powered bikes do now, there is good reason to believe that you’ll be seeing more of these battery-powered bikes in the future. Consumers are looking for more eco- and wallet-friendly transportation methods, and while die-hard Harley fans may never want to jump on an electric bike, there is definitely a different audience out there eager for the machine. Get ready to see an influx of them at motorcycle shows and on the market in the coming years.

You might even see some of these electric bikes at our the upcoming Colorado Motorcycle Expo at the National Western Complex from September 19th to the 21st. We’ll have new 2015 bikes on display as well as the swap meet, motorcycle auction, the international bikini team, and bike shows you’ve come to love. Contact us or visit our website to get your tickets, and see for yourself the presence electric bikes have at our show this year.
